I'm so pleased to share that I've recently achieved my Carbon Literacy accreditation! This is an important step, not just for me, but for how I run my furniture business and its impact on the world.
Carbon Literacy is about understanding the facts behind climate change, its effects on the planet and our local communities, and how we can all make a difference by taking informed action. This accreditation means I’ve learned more about how the choices we make—like the materials we use or the way we work—can help create a more sustainable future.
With climate change being such a big issue, this knowledge is vital. We all have a part to play in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the planet, and the more we know, the better we can do.
Sustainability has always been at the heart of my furniture making. From using locally sourced wind fallen fallen trees to embracing the idea of "tree to table," I try to create pieces that are both beautiful and good for the planet. This accreditation strengthens my focus on:
Lowering Carbon Footprints: By carefully choosing materials, improving processes, intelgent design, and reducing waste, I can make sure my furniture has a smaller impact on the environment.
Sharing Knowledge Through Craft: Telling the stories behind my work—from sourcing the wood to the finished piece—can inspire others to think about sustainability when they buy things.
Processing Local Wood: I process my own locally sourced, wind-fallen hardwoods, ensuring the pieces I make have a meaningful story and a connection to the landscape. This approach not only reduces waste but also highlights the value of using materials thoughtfully.
Creating Furniture That Lasts: My aim is to craft pieces designed to stand the test of time, reducing the need for replacement and helping to combat a throwaway culture.
Using Green Energy: I’m proud to use green energy in my workshop, making sure that the energy powering my tools is as sustainable as the materials I use.
Sustainability in design is more than just using eco-friendly materials; it’s about rethinking how we make and use things. By bringing Carbon Literacy into my work, I’m committing to being part of the solution—not just for now but for the future too.
This isn’t just important for my business; it’s important for the planet. Every little thing we do to reduce carbon emissions makes a difference, and when businesses like mine put sustainability first, it sets an example for others to follow.
This is just the start. Achieving Carbon Literacy accreditation has encouraged me to keep finding ways to make my work even more sustainable. I’m excited to share this journey with you and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
Together, we can build a more sustainable world—one piece of furniture at a time.
